Additional Benefits

Utilities need to take other factors into account in determining the value of a new resource to their system.  Some of these can be quantified and others cannot.  Utilities will value the reduced risk of a resource that has a reliable source of fuel supply such as wind, geothermal and solar.  Utilities, like investors, also value diversity of supply.  Public policy, regulations, and legislative requirements are all factors that, in our current environment, favor some types of renewable resource acquisitions.  For example, the existence of a Renewable Portfolio Standard or tax incentives for renewables will tilt the playing field in favor of renewables.  Finally, customer input is important.  If customers are demanding renewable resources, utilities will find a way to procure them.  Thus, all resource plans in the Northwest give extra value to renewables in their resource assessments to account for these less tangible benefits.  For more on the benefits of renewable energy to both utilities and others, click here.
